The prettiest racecourse in England, the last week of July, and a dress code that stops at the collar
Glorious Goodwood: Five Days of Flat Racing Above the Sussex Downs
About Glorious Goodwood
Goodwood Racecourse sits five miles north of Chichester in West Sussex, on land controlled by the family of the Duke of Richmond, whose seat is nearby Goodwood House. Its principal meeting was established in 1802 and has been known for generations as Glorious Goodwood, although it is officially the Qatar Goodwood Festival under its present sponsorship.
The meeting runs over five days at the end of July and the beginning of August, and it carries three of the thirty-six Group 1 flat races staged in Britain each year — the Sussex Stakes, the Goodwood Cup, and the Nassau Stakes. It is one of the fixed points of the British flat season, and the one where the racing and the setting are talked about in equal measure.
Why the Course Is Unlike Any Other
Goodwood is an unusual and genuinely complex track. The straight six furlongs, known as the Stewards’ Cup Course, climbs for the first furlong and then runs downhill for the rest. At the far end of the straight there is a tight right-handed loop carrying the starts for the longer distances, including the mile-and-a-quarter Craven Course and the two-mile-five-furlong Cup Course, whose start sits close to the winning post so that horses run out, round the loop, and back.
Through the loop the ground undulates severely and the turns come quickly. Riders who have never been there tend to get it wrong once. The course is used for flat racing only, and its position on the downland gives it the other thing it is known for — the Trundle, an Iron Age hill fort above the track that serves as an informal grandstand with a view of the entire circuit.

How the Five Days Are Shaped
Tuesday opens with the Goodwood Cup, the staying race that sets the tone of the week and often decides the season’s stayers’ argument. Wednesday belongs to the Sussex Stakes, the mile that regularly pulls together the best milers from the Guineas, Royal Ascot, and the French classics. Thursday carries the Nassau Stakes for fillies and mares, and the weekend closes with the Stewards’ Cup, a sprint handicap down the straight that is one of the hardest betting puzzles in the calendar.
The rhythm of the day is different from Ascot. Racing starts in the early afternoon, the crowd spreads across the downland rather than banking into stands, and the light in late July on that hillside does most of the work. It is a meeting people come back to forty years running, and they tend to keep the same patch of grass.
Where to Start
- Pick your day by the race, not the name — the three Group 1 contests fall on different days of the five
- Read the dress code properly — Goodwood is the meeting that relaxed the jacket and kept the standard, and the enclosures differ
- Arrive from the west — the approach through the downs is part of the day and the last miles are slow
- Book Sussex early — Chichester and the coast fill for the racing and again for Cowes Week immediately after

The Estate Around the Racing
The meeting sits inside a working estate rather than beside one. Goodwood House, the motor circuit, and the aerodrome are all within the same boundary, which is why the week feels less like a day out and more like a visit to somewhere that happens to be racing that afternoon.
The county helps. Chichester is ten minutes away, the harbour and the coast another fifteen, and the South Downs run east behind the course. Most people who take a house for the week use two of the five racing days and spend the rest of it sailing, walking, or eating — which is the sensible way to do it, because five consecutive afternoons on the hill is more than most constitutions manage.
How We Help
- Private boxes and restaurant tables in the enclosures, arranged around the day you actually want
- Houses and estates in West Sussex for the week rather than hotel rooms forty minutes out
- Helicopter transfers from London and onward movement to the Solent for Cowes Week
- Tables in Chichester and along the coast when the whole county is booked, via our Fine Dining & Nightlife service
- Introductions for owners and syndicates who want the paddock rather than the lawn
Goodwood is one estate with four separate events, and clients who come for one usually end up wanting the others. We arrange the Festival of Speed in July, the Revival in September, and the Members’ Meeting in spring, alongside the racing. For corporate hosting across the season our Business Concierge team handles the whole calendar as one arrangement.
The other Grand Prix worth pairing it with is Singapore, at the opposite end of the season and the opposite end of the spectrum — a night race through a city centre rather than a purpose-built circuit in the countryside.
