Cannes Film Festival Tickets: How Invitations Really Work

No box office, no general sale — how screenings, parties, and private events are actually allocated

About Cannes Film Festival Tickets

Cannes Film Festival tickets are among the most misunderstood in the world of events. There is no public box office and no general sale for the official screenings. The festival is a professional event for the film industry, and almost everything happens through accreditation or invitation. Understanding the system is the first step to seeing a premiere in the Grand Théâtre Lumière, and to spending the evenings where the festival really happens.

Why There Are No Public Tickets

The Festival de Cannes is organised for film professionals. According to the official festival FAQ, access to the festival area requires accreditation, issued to people working in the industry: producers, distributors, buyers, press, and talent. The Marché du Film, the film market that runs alongside the festival, has its own badges and screenings.

Seats at official screenings are then distributed as invitations, which pass through studios, sales agents, sponsors, partners, and hospitality allocations. That is why no legitimate seller offers “tickets” in the ordinary sense.

Screening Invitations

The evening screenings in the Grand Théâtre Lumière are the heart of the festival: the opening ceremony, the competition premieres, and the closing ceremony when the Palme d’Or is awarded. Invitations for these evenings are the most sought after and come with a strict dress code: black tie for men and evening dress for women.

Daytime screenings in the same theatre carry a more relaxed dress code and are often easier to arrange. For a first visit, they are a good way to experience the Palais without the full formality of an evening premiere.

Where to Start

Decide which moments matter most: a red carpet premiere, a daytime screening, a particular gala, or a private dinner. Then allow as much time as possible, because invitations and places are allocated long before the festival opens. Alternatives should always be ready in case a first choice is not available. For dining during the fortnight, see our guide to the restaurants Cannes Film Festival regulars book, and for the latest programme, our Cannes Film Festival event page.

Programmes for Film Lovers

The festival also runs programmes for non-professionals who love cinema, including accreditation for film enthusiasts through partner organisations and a dedicated programme for young film lovers. These give access to selected screenings rather than the red carpet evenings, and places are limited. Details are published each year on the official festival website.

Cannes Film Festival Parties

Much of the festival’s social life takes place away from the Palais. The amfAR Gala, a charity dinner and auction held during the festival since 1993, is among the most sought-after evenings of the fortnight. Fashion and jewellery houses host their own dinners and parties, and studios celebrate their films at villas, beach clubs, and on yachts along the bay.

Most Cannes Film Festival parties are invitation-only. A few charitable events sell tables or tickets, usually at considerable cost and in very limited numbers.

Cannes Film Festival Private Events

Beyond the parties, many of the most valuable evenings are Cannes Film Festival private events: dinners hosted by studios, brands, and financiers, often for fewer than a hundred guests. These are never publicly listed. Places come through relationships with hosts and organisers, and the right introduction matters more than any budget.

A Word on Resale

Because demand far exceeds supply, offers of “Cannes tickets” appear every year through unofficial channels. Invitations are often personal and can be refused at the door, and fraudulent offers are common. Any offer should be treated with caution and confirmed through a known, legitimate source before any payment is made.
