Four days in early December when the American art market moves to the beach
Art Basel Miami Beach: The Anchor of Miami Art Week
About Art Basel Miami Beach
Art Basel Miami Beach takes place in early December each year at the Miami Beach Convention Center, and it is the cornerstone of Miami Art Week. It is considered the most important art fair in the United States, and it is one of several editions of a fair that began in Basel, Switzerland, in 1970 and has since added Miami, Hong Kong, Paris, and Qatar.
The Miami edition started in 2002, after local collectors persuaded the fair’s organisers and Florida officials that the city was a logical stop on the art world circuit. The inaugural fair had been scheduled for 2001 and was delayed after the attacks of 11 September. Because of where it sits geographically, the fair gives particular weight to Latin American galleries, artists, and institutions — the characteristic that most clearly distinguishes it from the Swiss parent fair.
How Miami Art Week Works
The fair is the anchor rather than the whole. Miami Art Week is the collective name for the constellation of satellite fairs, gallery openings, museum programmes, private collection viewings, and commissioned installations that schedule themselves around the same days. Design Miami, the collectible design fair, runs in the same week and is a separate company entirely.
For a visitor, that structure has one practical implication: the convention centre is the least interesting place to spend the whole week. The private collections open to visitors during these days are among the strongest in the country, the Design District and Wynwood programme their year around it, and the institutions time their openings to catch the same audience. Anyone who only sees the fair has seen perhaps a third of what is available.

Where to Start
- Take the preview days — the fair is a different place before the public days begin
- Plan the private collections — several of the best in America open during this week and require arranging
- Stay on the beach or in the Design District — the choice determines how your evenings work
- Book everything early — the city is at full capacity and December in Miami is the high season regardless

Where It Sits in the Art Basel Family
The flagship fair in Basel remains the largest and most prestigious of the group, and it is the one most European collectors treat as the fixed point of the year. Miami is the American edition, Hong Kong serves as the Asian hub each March, and Paris was added in 2022. A Qatar edition followed in February 2026.
The commercial character differs by city. Basel is where the market sets its prices for the year, Hong Kong is where the Asian trade concentrates, and Miami is where the American collector base, the Latin American market, and the wider cultural economy of the city meet. It is the most social of the editions and, by some distance, the least formal — which is either the reason to go or the reason to go to Basel instead.
How We Help
- Preview access at the fair, arranged before the general programme opens
- Private collection and foundation viewings across the week, which is the part that cannot be bought at the door
- Accommodation on the beach and in the Design District, taken well before December
- Tables and evening arrangements across a week when the city is impossible, via our Fine Dining & Nightlife service
- Private aviation into Miami and transport that accounts for the causeways at the end of each evening
The December week is one arrangement and we handle the fairs together with Design Miami. Clients who follow the international calendar take Art Basel in Switzerland in June, Art Basel Hong Kong in March, and Frieze London in October. Corporate and client hosting during the week runs through our Business Concierge team.
Getting the Week Right
Miami in the first week of December is not a city that can be improvised. Restaurants are booked, drivers are committed, the causeways between the beach and the mainland are slow from late afternoon, and every hotel is full at a rate that has nothing to do with the fair. The people who enjoy this week are the ones who decided in September what they were doing.
The second piece of advice concerns pace. The fair is large, the satellite programme is larger, and the evening schedule runs long. Attempting all of it produces four days of queuing. Choosing two fairs, three collections, and two dinners produces a week people talk about for a year.
The third is the weather, which sounds trivial and is not. Early December in Florida is warm, humid, and occasionally wet, and the distance between an air-conditioned convention centre and an outdoor opening is enough to ruin a plan made in a colder country.
