Sundance Film Festival 2027: The First Boulder Edition, and How to Be There

After four decades in the Utah mountains, independent cinema moves to Colorado — and everything anyone knew about doing this festival well no longer applies

About Sundance

The Sundance Film Festival is the principal showcase for independent film in the United States, held over eleven days each January. The 2027 edition runs 21-31 January in Boulder, Colorado — the first outside Park City, Utah, after the festival chose Boulder as its new home.

What Makes 2027 Different

A festival that had spent decades in one town moves to another, and every piece of received wisdom moves with it. Venues are new: a mix of local cinemas, university concert halls and school auditoriums spread across a walkable town rather than a single resort street.

The habits that made Park City workable — which shuttle, which bar, which condo — do not transfer. For anyone attending, the first Boulder edition is a first edition in every practical sense, and the people who plan it as though it were Park City will have a difficult week.

Where to Start

  • Book accommodation before anything else — Boulder is a university town, not a resort built for peak-season crowds, and this is the constraint that will define the festival
  • Choose a half — the opening weekend carries the premieres and the industry, the second half is calmer and easier in every respect
  • Plan around the altitude and the cold — Boulder sits high, late January is genuinely cold, and days run from early screenings to late events, mostly on foot
  • Treat screenings as a schedule — films clash and the titles worth seeing are not known until the programme lands, so hold the days and fill them late

Dates and Venues

The 2027 festival runs 21-31 January in Boulder. Screenings are spread across local movie theatres, University of Colorado Boulder concert halls and school auditoriums, rather than concentrated on one street.

The programme is published closer to the festival. As with any first edition in a new town, venue capacities and the shape of the schedule are things to confirm late rather than assume early.

Passes and Access

Sundance sells in tiers — individual tickets, packages and full-festival passes, with the higher tiers opening earlier and carrying priority for the screenings that fill. Industry and premiere access sits above that again.

We do not resell passes. We hold the dates, secure accommodation while it exists, and assemble the access around which half of the festival you are attending.

How We Help

  • Accommodation in a town that has never absorbed this event before
  • A plan that survives a programme published late
  • Transport across a walkable festival in deep winter
  • Tables held in a small restaurant scene about to be overwhelmed
  • Someone reachable when a screening sells out and the evening changes

The opening weekend carries the premieres and the industry presence. The second half is quieter, easier to move around, and better for watching films rather than being seen.

Accommodation. Boulder has less of it than a resort town, and it is the one thing that cannot be solved late.
