Private Jet Membership: Is It Worth It?

The right structure depends on how often you fly, where you fly, and how much certainty you need

About Private Jet Membership

Private jet membership is an umbrella term for several different products, and the first task is to separate them. A membership can mean a prepaid card, a subscription, a share in an aircraft, or a programme that adds access to empty-leg flights. Each answers a different pattern of travel.

Whether any of them is worth it comes down to two numbers: how many hours you fly each year, and how flexible you are about when.

Private Jet Card, Subscription or Fractional Share

A jet card is the simplest structure. You buy flight hours in advance at agreed rates and draw them down. The format was created in 1997 and was designed for people flying up to around 50 hours a year without taking on the commitment of ownership. A private jet card typically guarantees availability and fixes the hourly rate, though the terms differ between programmes.

A private jet subscription is a newer variation. Instead of drawing down a balance, you commit to a recurring arrangement, which may include a set number of hours, defined aircraft categories, and, in some programmes, empty-leg or seat-sharing options.

Fractional ownership sits at the other end. You buy a share, typically a sixteenth or an eighth, of an aircraft from a provider’s fleet, with guaranteed access on short notice. It involves a longer contract, often five years, and is generally suited to those who fly more.

What Drives Jet Membership Cost

Rather than quote numbers, we find it more useful to explain what determines jet membership cost, because the headline rate rarely tells the whole story.

The factors that matter include the aircraft category, the number of hours, the length of the commitment, and whether the rate is fixed or tied to the market. Beyond the rate, programmes can add fuel adjustments, charges for positioning an aircraft, surcharges or restrictions on peak days, and expiry dates for unused balances, depending on the provider. For fractional shares, there are also monthly management fees and an occupied hourly rate.

Read the terms for what is excluded, not only what is promised. The honest comparison is between the all-in annual figure and what the same journeys would have cost on demand. Our guide to private jet charter cost explains the on-demand side of that comparison.

When Membership Makes Sense

Membership suits a particular profile: frequent flights on a predictable set of routes, a need for guaranteed availability on peak dates, and a preference for a single contract.

It suits less well when travel is occasional or seasonal, when routes change, or when you want a different type of aircraft each time. In those cases on-demand charter, arranged by someone who compares the market each time, keeps flexibility. Our comparison of private jet charter and first class sets out the case for flying privately at all.

Where to Start

  • Count the hours honestly. Look at last year’s flights, not next year’s intentions
  • List the routes and the peak dates. If most of your travel falls on the busiest days, check exclusions before anything else
  • Choose the aircraft category by the longest regular flight. A smaller aircraft that needs a fuel stop may cost you more in time than it saves
  • Check who operates the aircraft. Safety record, certification, and insurance cover belong in the decision, whatever the brand

How We Help

We are not an aircraft operator and we do not sell a membership of our own. We analyse your flying, compare cards, subscriptions and on-demand options on equal terms, and read the contract with you. When you fly, we arrange the rest of the journey: ground transport, catering, customs and the destination, from tables through our fine dining and nightlife service to the stay itself. For companies, our business concierge team manages the same travel for teams.
