Yacht Charter in the Mediterranean: Routes, Season, and Crew
About Yacht Charter in the Mediterranean
Every enquiry about a yacht charter in the Mediterranean begins with a question of scale. The Mediterranean Sea runs roughly 4,000 km from the Strait of Gibraltar to the coast of Turkey and is bordered by 21 countries and territories. No single itinerary covers it, so the real decision is which part of it you want to know well.
That choice shapes everything that follows: the yacht, the crew, the ports, and the week in which you sail.
Choose a Basin, Not a Destination
Think of the Mediterranean as three or four distinct cruising grounds, each with its own rhythm.
The western basin links the French Riviera, Corsica, Sardinia, and the Balearic Islands. Distances between harbours are short, and the pace suits guests who want a different evening setting each night. The Monaco coast is the natural start of this route, and our guide to the Monaco Yacht Show explains how the harbour behaves in September.
The central basin belongs to Italy. Sicily, the largest island in the sea, anchors the south, and the mainland coast from Portofino to the Amalfi Coast offers a more cultural itinerary, with towns that are best reached by water.
The eastern basin covers the Greek islands and the Turkish coast. Distances are longer, and in high summer the meltemi, the northerly wind of the Aegean that blows from about mid-May to mid-September, can be strong, which calls for experienced guests and a capable crew.
The Adriatic and the larger islands each deserve their own plan. We cover them in our guides to yacht charter in Croatia and yacht charter in Sardinia.

Mediterranean Yacht Rental: Crewed, Skippered or Bareboat
The terminology matters, because it decides who is responsible for the yacht. A bareboat charter means you operate the vessel yourself, usually with a recognised sailing qualification. A skippered charter adds a professional skipper. A crewed charter provides a full team — typically a captain, a chef, a deckhand, and a stewardess.
For Mediterranean yacht rental at the level our members expect, crewed is the standard. The crew is the product: the quality of the chef, the judgement of the captain, and the attention of the stewardess determine the week far more than the specification sheet does.
When to Sail
Large yachts follow a seasonal pattern: the Mediterranean in summer, the Caribbean in winter. That migration is why the best crewed yachts are committed early for July and August. The Mediterranean season broadly runs from spring to autumn, with July and August the busiest weeks. The shoulder months either side are quieter, and the harbours are easier, though conditions differ by basin.
If your dates are fixed by school holidays or an event, start with the dates. If they are flexible, start with the yacht.
Luxury Yacht Mediterranean: What Shapes the Cost
A week on a luxury yacht in the Mediterranean is priced by a combination of size, age, builder, crew, season, and cruising area. The charter fee is rarely the full picture. Provisioning allowances, taxes, crew gratuity, and fuel are typically additional. We explain the structure in our guide to private yacht charter, so you can read a proposal line by line.

Where to Start
- Decide the basin first. The yacht should be chosen to suit the route, not the other way round
- Fix the dates, then the length of the week. Seven days is a convention, not a rule, and a shorter charter in the right place often suits better
- Choose the crew with the same care as the yacht. Ask who the captain is and what the chef cooks, not only how many cabins there are
- Plan the shore side. Tables, transfers, and access in each port are what turn a good itinerary into a seamless one, and they need to be held in advance

How We Help
We shortlist yachts against the route, not against a catalogue, and read the charter proposal with you. We arrange the flights or private aviation to the embarkation port, the transfers, and the tables and beach clubs along the way through our fine dining and nightlife service. For company guests and incentive groups, our business concierge team coordinates the same arrangements. We are a concierge that arranges access, not a booking site.

Yes. Distances in the western basin are short, so a week can include the French Riviera, Corsica, and Sardinia. Customs and port arrangements are handled by the crew and your concierge
The fee covers the yacht and crew. Provisioning, taxes, gratuity, and often fuel are separate, which is why the full structure should be read before you commit
