About Henley
Henley Royal Regatta is held over five days at the turn of June and July on the Thames at Henley-on-Thames. Crews race two at a time, side by side, upstream over roughly a mile and 550 yards.
The Henley Regatta Dress Code
Stewards’ Enclosure. Gentlemen: lounge suit or blazer with flannels, and a tie or cravat, with jackets kept on regardless of the weather. Ladies: a dress or skirt with a hemline below the knee — measured in practice, not in principle — and no trousers of any kind. Divided skirts are not accepted.
Regatta Enclosure. Considerably more relaxed, though smart dress is still expected and shorts are not welcome. Everywhere else along the bank there is no code at all. Mobile phones may not be used in the Stewards’ Enclosure, and that is enforced as strictly as the hemlines.
Where to Start
- Establish which enclosure is realistic — the Stewards’ is for Members and their guests, everything else is open or arranged
- Read the dress code as a packing list — jackets stay on, hemlines are checked, and there is no allowance for the weather
- Arrive by water or by car with a plan — parking does not meaningfully exist in the town during the regatta
- Treat the racing as the point — side-by-side over a straight mile is the purest format in the sport

How Access Works
The Stewards’ Enclosure is for Members and their guests, and membership is by election with a waiting list. It cannot be bought at the gate.
The Regatta Enclosure is open to the public and tickets can be purchased in advance or on the day. Hospitality along the course sits outside both and is the usual route for anyone without a Member behind them.
