An island to yourself, a staff that exists only for your group, and a sea that no one else will cross
Private Island Rental: What a Whole-Island Stay Involves
A private island rental is the most complete form of privacy travel can offer. For the length of the stay, the island, its beaches, its villas, and its staff belong to one group alone. There are no other guests, no shared restaurants, and no reason to leave. A private island vacation is also the kind of stay that rewards careful planning more than almost any other.
What a Buyout Includes
Most private islands are rented as an exclusive buyout. The island is booked for a minimum number of nights, and everything on it is reserved for the group: the villas or main house, pools, beaches, boats, and water sports. Rates usually include the resident staff, from a chef and housekeeping to boat captains and dive instructors, and many include meals and most activities.
What varies is how much is included. Some islands are fully inclusive; others charge separately for wine, spa treatments, excursions, or transfers. Reading the inclusions carefully is the simplest way to avoid surprises.
Where to Look
Private islands for rent cluster in a few regions, each with its own character.
- The Caribbean — the British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas have some of the best-known private islands, with Necker Island in the BVI and Musha Cay in the Exumas among them
- The Indian Ocean — the Seychelles offers exclusive islands such as North Island and Frégate Island Private, with granite beaches and protected nature
- The Maldives — resort islands can often be booked in their entirety for large groups, reached by seaplane from Malé
- The South Pacific — Fiji’s Laucala Island combines privacy with an unusually wide range of activities, from golf to diving
- East Africa — islands off Tanzania combine a beach stay with easy access to safari on the mainland
Seasons matter everywhere. The Caribbean is at its best from December to April, the Seychelles in the calmer months between the trade winds, and the Maldives in the dry season from roughly November to April. The official Seychelles tourism board sets out the islands’ seasons and conservation rules in detail.

Getting There
Arrival is part of the experience and part of the planning. Most private islands are reached by a combination of flights: an international flight to a regional hub, then a private aircraft, seaplane, helicopter, or boat for the final stretch. Luggage limits on small aircraft, daylight-only seaplane operations, and customs procedures at small airports all shape the itinerary.
Planning the Stay
A private island is only as good as the preparation behind it. Preferences for food and wine, dietary requirements, activities, celebrations, and the rhythm of each day are best shared with the island team well before arrival. For families, the island’s approach to children, safety around water, and childcare is worth discussing early. For celebrations, many islands can arrange events on the beach, musicians, or visiting chefs, given enough notice.
Who It Suits
Private islands are ideal for milestone celebrations, multi-generational family holidays, small weddings, and guests for whom privacy is essential. They are less suited to travellers who want variety from one day to the next, or who prefer the energy of a larger resort. Being honest about that at the outset saves a long journey to the wrong place.

You Define the Goal. We Engineer the Path
Tell us the group, the dates, and the occasion, and your Private Advisor will find the right island
Where to Start
Begin with the group and the purpose: how many guests, how many nights, the time of year, and what the stay is for. From there, the choice of region usually becomes clear, and the right islands can be compared on inclusions, access, and availability. The most requested islands are booked well ahead for peak dates, particularly around the festive season. For villas and chalets beyond islands, see our Rare Rentals collection.
