Nineteen corners, concrete walls on both sides, and a race that finishes close to the two-hour limit
Singapore Grand Prix: Formula One Under Floodlights at Marina Bay
About the Singapore Grand Prix
The Singapore Grand Prix is run on the Marina Bay Street Circuit, the first street circuit in Asia designed for Formula One, and it was the first Formula One night race. An earlier Singapore Grand Prix was held at Thomson Road between 1966 and 1973; the modern event returned to the calendar in 2008 at Marina Bay, where it was the eight hundredth World Championship race since the series began in 1950.
That first Marina Bay race was won by Fernando Alonso for Renault in circumstances that unravelled a year later, when it emerged that his teammate had been ordered to crash deliberately to bring out the safety car at a moment chosen to help Alonso. Sebastian Vettel holds the record at the circuit with five victories, and in 2022 a contract extension placed the race on the calendar until at least 2028.
Why Drivers Call It the Hardest Race of the Year
The reasons are cumulative rather than dramatic. The circuit has nineteen corners, which is a great many, and it is the slowest track in Formula One run at normal race distance. The walls sit close, so there is almost no run-off and very little margin for error. Heat and humidity do the rest: fluid loss over a race that runs close to the two-hour limit is severe, and four editions have been stopped on time rather than on laps.
The consequence is safety cars. Until the 2024 race, every single edition at Marina Bay had featured at least one, twenty-four deployments in total, and each one extends the running further towards the limit. For a spectator that is good news — the race almost never settles into a procession — but it also means a Sunday evening that ends much later than the schedule suggests.

Where to Start
- Take the whole weekend, not just Sunday — the Friday and Saturday sessions run at the same hour and the city is easier
- Stay inside the circuit footprint — the road closures make a hotel two kilometres away feel like twenty
- Plan for the humidity, not the heat — the evening start does very little to relieve it
- Decide grandstand or suite early — the sight lines on a street circuit vary enormously between them
How the Weekend Is Timed
Everything happens in the evening. Because the race is run under floodlights, the sessions are scheduled late in the local day, which conveniently places them in the European morning and afternoon. The practical effect on the ground is that the weekend inverts: mornings are free, afternoons are for moving into position, and the interesting hours run from early evening until very late at night.
The circuit has changed since the early editions. The old turns sixteen to nineteen were removed to allow construction work beside the bay, replaced by a long flat-out section running to what is now turn sixteen. The lap count rose from sixty-one to sixty-two and lap times fell by roughly ten seconds, and the race is now more likely to run its full distance inside the time limit than it used to be — though the basic layout, and the walls, remain much as they were.

How We Help
- Suites, terraces, and grandstand seats chosen for the corner rather than the brochure
- Hotel suites and residences inside the circuit perimeter, taken before the calendar is confirmed
- Paddock and pit lane arrangements where they genuinely exist, and a plain answer where they do not
- Tables across a weekend when the whole city is booked, via our Fine Dining & Nightlife service
- Private aviation into Singapore and transport that accounts for three nights of road closures
Singapore is the race our corporate clients ask for most often, because the timing suits Asian and European business travel equally and the whole city participates. Client programmes, hospitality and delegation movement across the weekend run through our Business Concierge team, and for those following endurance racing as well we arrange the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June.
The City Around the Race
Very few Grands Prix take over their host city to this extent. The track runs through the financial district and along the bay, which means the grandstands look onto office towers and the Padang rather than onto gravel traps, and the concert programme and the restaurant scene run at full volume for four days.
What that produces is a race weekend where the non-racing hours are genuinely worth planning. Singapore is compact, the food is among the best anywhere at every level, and the city is comfortable to move around in once you understand which roads are closed. Clients who have done it once tend to come back and stay longer, treating the Grand Prix as the anchor for a week rather than the whole reason for the trip.
