Coachella 2027: What the Desert Weekend Actually Involves

Two weekends in the Colorado Desert, and the distance between doing it properly and doing it from a car park

About Coachella 2027

Coachella 2027 runs across two weekends in April at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, in the Coachella Valley of the Colorado Desert. Both weekends carry the same line-up. The site holds around 125,000 people a day.

It began in 1999, organised by Goldenvoice, and traces back further still — to a 1993 Pearl Jam concert staged at the polo grounds. What started as a desert rock festival is now the event that sets the year’s tone in music and, arguably, in fashion.

It is also entirely open. Anyone can buy a ticket, and roughly a quarter of a million people do. That is worth saying plainly, because it changes what there is to arrange: not access to the festival, but everything around it.

Which of the Two Weekends to Take

The first weekend carries the media, the brand activations and most of the people who are there to be seen. The second is the same line-up in front of a smaller, more local crowd, with shorter queues and easier movement between stages.

Neither is better. The first is the cultural event; the second is the music. For most of our members travelling with family or in a group, the second weekend tends to suit — and accommodation across the valley is marginally easier to hold.

What the Ticket Tiers Actually Change

General admission and VIP see the same performances. VIP buys shade, seated areas, shorter bar and washroom queues, and a quieter route across a site that is otherwise a long walk in desert heat. In practice it is the difference between a day you enjoy and a day you endure.

Separate from that sits on-site accommodation. The Safari tents and Lake Eldorado houses put you inside the grounds rather than in the valley, which removes the single worst part of the weekend: the drive out at two in the morning alongside everyone else. These are limited in number and allocated long before the line-up is announced.

Where to Base Yourself

The valley runs from Palm Springs through Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells and La Quinta, and the whole of it fills for both weekends. Palm Springs has the hotels and the architecture; La Quinta and Indian Wells, they are booked the previous autumn.

Where to Start

  • Decide the weekend before anything else — accommodation, transfers and staff all follow from it, and the two weekends behave differently
  • Treat accommodation as the binding constraint — the festival will sell you a ticket in November; the house you want was taken in October
  • Settle the on-site question early — Safari tents and the Lake Eldorado houses are the only way to avoid the nightly exit, and they go first
  • Plan the days, not just the nights — the valley is a golf, spa and dining destination in its own right, and the festival gates open in the afternoon
  • Dress for 35°C (95°F) and dust — the desert is hot by day and genuinely cold after dark, and the ground is sand

Getting There

Palm Springs International sits half an hour from the polo grounds and takes scheduled traffic. Jacqueline Cochran Regional at Thermal is ten minutes away and is where private aviation goes during the festival, which is why its slots are spoken for well in advance. Los Angeles is two to three hours by road and considerably longer on the Friday.

How We Help

  • A house in the valley for the weekend that suits, held from the previous autumn
  • Hospitality and on-site accommodation where it exists, arranged before the line-up is public
  • Tables and access across a valley that is fully booked for both weekends, through our Fine Dining & Nightlife service
  • Ground transport that accounts for a site where 125,000 people leave at the same time
  • Private aviation into Thermal or Palm Springs, and the staff to make the days between the nights worth having — ask your Business Concierge

A year for the accommodation. Tickets are the easy part; the house, the on-site tent and the Thermal slot are not.
