Medical Spa: How to Judge One Before Any Treatment

What a medical spa is, how oversight differs between countries and states, and what to check before a first appointment

About Medical Spas

A medical spa, often shortened to med spa, sits somewhere between a wellness center and a skin care clinic. It offers cosmetic and wellness treatments, some of which are medical procedures, in a setting designed to feel like a spa. The name tells you about the atmosphere, and very little about who is responsible for your care.

This guide explains how oversight varies and what to check. Perfect.Live does not provide medical services. We arrange access to vetted specialists and clinics and coordinate the visits, and a physician decides what is appropriate.

What a Medical Spa Is and Who Oversees It

In the United States, rules differ from state to state. The American Med Spa Association, an industry body, notes that each state has its own rules about who can provide which services. A medical spa typically has a medical director: a physician or another independent health professional who delegates and supervises treatments within their scope of practice. How closely that supervision works in practice varies.

The practical point is that the same treatment can be performed by a physician in one place and by a delegated practitioner in another. Both arrangements can be legitimate, depending on local rules. What matters is that you know which one applies to you.

Medical Spa Regulation Differs by Country

In England, the Care Quality Commission explains that it does not regulate all cosmetic treatments, only those involving surgical procedures. Anti-wrinkle injections such as Botox and dermal fillers fall outside its remit, and it advises that all cosmetic treatments, including non-surgical ones, should be carried out by someone trained and qualified. Practitioners are not required to join a voluntary register, but those who do can be easier to check.

The picture is changing. In August 2025, the UK government announced plans for a licensing framework in England, under which lower-risk treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections and lip fillers would need local authority licensing. A public consultation on the details was planned for early 2026, so check the current position before booking.

In the United States, the FDA advises working with a licensed healthcare provider who has experience in dermatology or plastic surgery and is trained to inject dermal fillers. It also warns against buying fillers sold directly to the public, which may be fake, contaminated, or not approved for use in the US.

Choosing a Medical Spa: What to Check

Searching for “med spa near me” produces long lists, and distance is the least useful filter. These checks matter more.

Who will perform the treatment, and what are their qualifications? Is a physician involved, and when? Are the products approved and sealed, and can you see the labelling? What happens if a complication arises, and who is reachable afterwards? A good provider answers all of this before you ask twice.

A skin care clinic that treats skin conditions is a different thing from a salon offering cosmetic procedures, and the label does not always tell you which you are visiting. Where a concern may be medical, a dermatologist is the better first appointment. Cosmetic procedures carry risks, and the FDA notes that serious ones can occur. A good consultation explains them plainly.

Arrange It With Perfect.Live

Tell us the treatment and the city, and we will find a vetted practitioner

Where to Start

  • Ask who performs the treatment. Name, qualification, and role, before you book
  • Ask about medical supervision. Who is the supervising physician, and how is that supervision arranged?
  • Check licensing or registration. Use the official register for the country or state, not the clinic’s own wording
  • Plan the aftercare first. Know whom to contact, and how, if something does not feel right
