A vast starred selection, and counters where the best tables seat only a handful of guests
Michelin Star Restaurants in Tokyo: A Concierge Guide
About Michelin Star Restaurants in Tokyo
Michelin star restaurants Tokyo has to offer form a selection unlike any other: the 2026 guide lists 12 restaurants with three stars, 26 with two, and 122 with one, 160 in total. The selection was announced on 25 September 2025, and it covered 526 restaurants when Bib Gourmand and other recommended listings are included.
The scale is the first thing to understand. The second is that, in Tokyo, a star is a starting point. The harder step is getting a seat.
The Tokyo Michelin Guide
The Tokyo Michelin Guide made its debut in November 2007 as the 2008 edition, and it is now more than 18 years old. The next selection, for Tokyo, Kyoto-Osaka, and Nara, will be unveiled together in Tokyo on 16 February 2027, which will mark 20 years of the guide in Japan.
The guide describes the city as one where centuries of culinary tradition meet bold innovation: sushi, kaiseki, French cooking, and world cuisines, reinterpreted with a Japanese hand. The Michelin Guide defines three stars as exceptional cuisine worth a special journey.

Three Stars, Two Stars, One Star
In the 2026 edition Myojaku, a kaiseki-style restaurant in Nishi-Azabu, was promoted from two stars to three. The three-star tier also includes French kitchens as well as Japanese ones.
Three promotions to two stars were Nishiazabu Sushi Shin, Hakuun, and Ensui. At one star, 14 restaurants were newly listed.
For the best Michelin restaurants in Tokyo, the stars are only a start. In every tier, the rooms differ: counters of a handful of seats, rooms with private tables, and a few large dining rooms in hotels. Choosing between them is the work of a concierge.
How Starred Tables Are Reached
Many of the starred restaurants in Tokyo are small and seat a few guests at a time. Some take reservations directly or through a booking service, and some work only through a regular or an introducer.
For a first visit, the practical route is through a concierge with relationships. We do not promise a particular restaurant will open its doors. We approach it properly and tell you early if it will not.
Where to Start
- Choose the format. A sushi counter, a kaiseki room, and a French dining room are three different evenings. Pick the format, then the tier
- Look at the two-star tier. The distance between two and three stars is narrower than the numbers suggest, and the two-star group includes some of the city’s most distinct kitchens
- Watch the new stars. A promotion changes demand quickly. Newly recognised restaurants are worth securing before the next announcement
- Plan around the February announcement. The next selection on 16 February 2027 will move some restaurants up and others out. For trips after that date, hold options in more than one tier
What to Know Before the Evening
Time and etiquette matter at the counter. Arrival is on time to the minute, dietary requirements are agreed in advance, and fragrance and photography are judged more closely than in a Western dining room. A briefing before the evening protects both you and the introduction. For the wider city beyond the starred tables, see our guide to the best restaurants in Tokyo.

How We Help
We secure starred tables across the formats, including counters and private rooms where they exist, approach introduction-only restaurants through the proper channels, and hold a second option until the first is confirmed. We also brief the restaurant on dietary needs, arrange transport and interpretation, and plan the evening around the table. The same method runs through our Fine Dining & Nightlife service, and we apply it to business dinners when Tokyo is part of a longer itinerary. Our guide to Michelin star restaurants in Paris shows how the same approach works in Europe.
