Luxury Hotels Paris: A Concierge Shortlist

In Paris the address is the decision — each of the great hotels belongs to a different square and a different version of the city

About Luxury Hotels in Paris

The choice of luxury hotels in Paris is rarely about the standard of the room, which at this level is assured. It is about location, history, and the kind of Paris you want to wake up in. Place Vendôme, the Tuileries, the Concorde, and Avenue Montaigne are four different cities within a few kilometres.

France recognises its most distinguished hotels with the Palace distinction, created in 2010 and awarded by Atout France for a period of three years. The 2026 list names 13 Palace hotels in Paris. This guide is a concierge’s view of how to choose between them. For a comparable format in another city, see our luxury hotels in London guide.

Reading Paris by Address

Place Vendôme. The Ritz Paris, at 15 Place Vendôme, opened on 1 June 1898 under César Ritz. Coco Chanel lived in the hotel for more than thirty years, and the Coco Chanel Suite is named for her. It reopened on 6 June 2016 after a four-year renovation. This is the Paris of jewellers and old money.

Place de la Concorde. The Hôtel de Crillon occupies a palace designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel and completed in 1758. It has been a hotel since 1909, reopened on 5 July 2017 after a renovation, and has been run by Rosewood since 2013. Its position is the most formal in the city.

The Tuileries. Le Meurice stands on Rue de Rivoli opposite the Tuileries Garden, between Place de la Concorde and the Louvre. Salvador Dalí kept the Royal Suite for about a month each year over three decades. It is the choice for those whose Paris begins with a gallery.

Avenue Montaigne. The Hôtel Plaza Athénée opened in 1913 on the avenue that has since become Paris’s centre for high fashion. It is the natural address for anyone whose week is organised around shopping, couture or the shows.

The Left Bank. The Hôtel Lutetia, on Boulevard Raspail in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, opened in 1910 in the Art Nouveau style and reopened in July 2018 after a long restoration. It is the quieter alternative on the other side of the river.

Best Hotels in Paris for Different Kinds of Stay

The best hotels in Paris are not interchangeable. A business week, a family stay, a fashion week, and a romantic weekend each point to a different address.

Top hotels in Paris also differ in character. Some are historic palaces with formal service, others are modern houses with larger rooms and a more contemporary tone. Neither is better; the question is the match.

5 Star Hotels in Paris and the Palace Distinction

A search for 5 star hotels Paris returns a long list, but the Palace distinction is the more selective guide. It sits above the standard five-star classification and is reserved for hotels considered to represent the best of French hospitality. The hotels on the 2026 list include the Hôtel de Crillon, Le Meurice, the Hôtel Plaza Athénée, Le Bristol, and the Four Seasons Hotel George V. Not every historic address holds the distinction in a given year, so it is a useful guide rather than the whole story.

Where to Start

  • Choose the address before the hotel. Place Vendôme, Concorde, the Tuileries, Avenue Montaigne, and the Left Bank give very different weeks.
  • Decide how much formality you want. A palace hotel offers a particular standard of service, and some guests prefer a smaller house.
  • Check the calendar. Fashion weeks, couture shows, and major exhibitions tighten availability across the city, and the best suites go first.
  • Think about the room, not the category. A suite on a courtyard and a suite on the square are different stays at the same hotel.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the stay. The Ritz Paris on Place Vendôme, the Hôtel de Crillon on Place de la Concorde, and Le Meurice by the Tuileries are three of the city’s most historic addresses.

Palace is an official French distinction created in 2010 and awarded by Atout France for a period of three years. It sits above the standard five-star classification.

The 1st and 8th arrondissements hold many of the city’s grandest hotels, around Place Vendôme, the Tuileries, and Avenue Montaigne. The Left Bank offers a quieter alternative.

For fashion weeks, couture shows, and the busiest seasons, months ahead is sensible, particularly for suites. A concierge can often secure rooms that no longer appear as available.

Most arrange both, and we coordinate them so that the car, the table, and the room all work to the same schedule.
