Golden Globes: The Week That Opens the Awards Season

A January evening in Beverly Hills, and a city that spends the whole month campaigning

About the Golden Globes

The Golden Globes are American awards for excellence in international film and television. The ceremony has been held since 1944, normally in January, and it is a major part of the awards season that culminates each year in the Academy Awards. The eligibility period runs from 1 January to 31 December, and whether a production is entered in the film or the television categories depends on how it was first released.

The organisation behind the awards has changed. They were established and run for decades by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which presented them until 2023; since 2024 they have been presented by Dick Clark Productions, owned by Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge Industries, and broadcast on CBS and Paramount+. Two honorary awards sit outside the competitive categories: the Cecil B. DeMille Award, named for its first recipient, and the Carol Burnett Award for television.

What Is Actually Accessible, and What Is Not

We will be direct about this, because the alternative is to waste a client’s time. The ceremony itself is not open. The eighty-third edition was held on 11 January 2026 at the Beverly Hilton, and seats in that room are allocated to nominees, their guests, the studios, the networks, and the broadcaster. They are not sold, and anyone offering them is offering something else.

What is genuinely arrangeable is the week around it, and in Los Angeles in January that is a great deal. The city’s restaurants, hotels and private venues are running at their highest pitch of the year, the studios and production companies are hosting, and the nominations — announced in early December — determine the entire shape of the month that follows. Our work here is the city, not the room.

Where to Start

  • Plan around the nominations, not the ceremony — they land in December and set the month’s schedule
  • Take a house rather than a hotel — January in Los Angeles is a month of hosting, not of hotel bars
  • Book restaurants weeks ahead — the awards calendar empties every good table in the city
  • Accept what is closed — the ceremony and several of the parties are invitation-only and cannot be bought into

How the Awards Season Is Structured

The Globes open the sequence. From January the season runs through the guild awards and the British ceremony in February to the Academy Awards, and the whole period functions as a single extended campaign rather than a series of separate evenings. A win in January changes the odds and the spending in February.

The history is less continuous than it looks. The ceremony was not televised from 1969 to 1972 or in 1979; the 2008 edition was cancelled during the Writers Guild strike, and the 2022 ceremony was reduced to a non-televised gala when it lost its broadcaster. Recent years have brought new categories — the 2026 ceremony honoured podcasts for the first time — which is a reasonable indication of how quickly the definition of the industry is moving.

How We Help

  • Houses and estates in Beverly Hills, Bel Air, and the canyons for the month rather than the weekend
  • Restaurant tables and private dining across a period when the city is fully committed, via our Fine Dining & Nightlife service
  • Cars, security, and movement that work on a night when large parts of Beverly Hills are closed
  • Hosting and event production for studios, brands, and production companies during the season, through our Business Concierge team
  • Private aviation into Los Angeles and onward movement to the desert or the coast afterwards

Clients who follow the film calendar generally take the festivals rather than the ceremonies, because that is where access genuinely exists. We arrange Venice and Toronto in September, where premieres and screenings are open in a way that a January ceremony is not, and for those who want a ceremony week regardless, we arrange London around the BAFTA Awards in February.

Los Angeles in January

The month is the city at its most interesting and its most difficult. The weather is the best of the year, the industry is entirely preoccupied, and every venue with a reputation is booked by someone with a campaign to run. For a visitor with no stake in the outcome, that combination is either fascinating or exhausting depending on how it is planned.

The practical answer is to treat the ceremony as a date on the calendar rather than a destination, and to build the week around the things that are actually open — the restaurants, the galleries, the coast, the desert two hours east. A house in the hills with a cook and a driver will produce a better week in January than any attempt to get closer to the room.

For anyone whose business genuinely is the industry, the calculation is different, and the value of being in the city in January is obvious. In that case the work is scheduling, hosting and movement, and we handle it as a corporate arrangement rather than a trip.
