Verbier Festival: A Ski Resort That Fills With Soloists in July

Two weeks of chamber music and orchestral concerts at fifteen hundred metres, in a village built for winter

About the Verbier Festival

The Verbier Festival is a two-week international classical music festival held in late July and early August in Verbier, the mountain resort in the Swiss Valais, south-east of Lausanne. It was founded in 1994 and has since attracted soloists of the first rank to a village of a few thousand people.

The programme runs from recitals in the church to full orchestral concerts in a purpose-built tent, with chamber ensembles assembled specifically for the festival — combinations of players who would not otherwise share a stage, which is a large part of the appeal for anyone who follows performers rather than repertoire.

The Academy Is the Real Institution

Alongside the concert programme runs an academy: young musicians selected internationally, taught and mentored during the festival by the artists performing at it, and given platforms of their own. The Verbier Festival Orchestra is drawn from them, and a considerable number of players now in major orchestras came through it.

For an audience this has a practical consequence. The academy sessions and student recitals are open, often free, and frequently the most interesting hours of the day — a masterclass given by a soloist who is playing a concerto that evening is a different kind of access from a concert ticket.

Why a Ski Resort in Summer

Verbier exists for winter, which means in late July it has the infrastructure of a resort and none of the pressure: the chalets are available, the restaurants have tables, the lifts run for walkers and cyclists, and the temperature at fifteen hundred metres sits in the low twenties.

That combination is the reason the festival works as a family week rather than a music pilgrimage. Mornings on the mountain, an academy session in the afternoon, a concert in the evening, and a chalet to come back to: that is a far easier proposition than the equivalent fortnight in Salzburg or Aix.

Where to Start

  • Take a chalet, not a hotel — Verbier is a chalet village and summer is when the good ones are obtainable
  • Build the day around one concert — the programme runs morning to late evening and doing all of it is a mistake
  • Use the academy — the open sessions are the part regular attendees rate highest
  • Bring walking boots — the Valais in summer is the point as much as the music

The Village in Its Other Season

Verbier in winter is one of the busiest resorts in the Alps, with the Four Valleys lift system and a reputation that fills every bed. In late July the same village has a few thousand people in it, the terraces are half empty at lunchtime, and the mountain above it is a walking and riding area rather than a lift queue.

The practical consequence is that the festival is the rare cultural event where accommodation is not the constraint. A chalet that is committed two winters in advance is available in July, which inverts the usual problem and means the decision can be made months rather than years ahead.

The Valais below the resort is also one of the more interesting wine regions in Europe and almost unknown outside Switzerland, because the Swiss drink nearly all of it themselves. Estates in Fully, Chamoson, and Sierre are half an hour from Verbier and receive visitors by arrangement.

One more thing about the concert venues. The main tent seats around eighteen hundred, which for the calibre of soloist appearing is a small room by any standard — the same players fill halls of three thousand in London and New York. The church and the smaller spaces are smaller still. Proximity is the whole character of the festival, and it is why regular attendees return rather than sampling it once.

How We Help

  • Seats for the concerts that matter, including the orchestral evenings that sell out early
  • A chalet in Verbier for the fortnight, which in summer is the easy season to secure
  • Tables across the village and the Valais, via our Fine Dining & Nightlife service
  • Guides for the mountain, and private tastings in the Valais vineyards below the resort
  • Transfers from Geneva or Sion, and onward to Montreux — ask your Business Concierge

The two Swiss festivals follow one another in July about ninety minutes apart, which for anyone spending the month in the country makes both reachable from one base.
